Yesterday evening we went to the Two sides of the Moon lecture by writer and former astronaut Dave Scott . It was a very lively and interesting lecture. For an hour we heard detailed and clear explanations on the space race, the Gemini missions, Apollo missions and Moon landings. Two sides of the Moon is also the title of the book that Dave Scott and cosmonaut Alexei Leonov have written together. It is an account of the space race between the US and the USSR seen from both sides. There was a time when this book would have been unthinkable. Both countries were enemies and pitched against each other to be the first to land in the Moon. The US got there first but as Dave Scott told us, if the Russians had been a bit less cautious, they may have been the first! Their cosmonauts are living legends just as the US astronauts.

In fact, I realised if there are living legends and people we call 'heros' I was listening to one of them. For there was a time when a few men were risking there lives to go to space, when landing in the Moon was a dream. And Dave Scott was one of them. He happened to make a little remark on having a bit of a problem while Neil Armstrong and him were coming back to Earth aboard the Gemini VIII . A bit of a problem? I watched the chapter on the Gemini missions, the first on the tv series From the Earth to the Moon. What really happened was not a bit of a problem. Armstrong and Scott may have died up there. They reacted on time and managed to stop the Gemini capsule from spinning, getting out of course and probably killing them. If Scott had not had the idea to use the reentry control system to stop the capsule spinning, let me tell you this, Dave Scott would have not been yesterday in my city and Neil Armstrong would have NOT been the first man on the Moon. This is what I mean when I say yesterday I met a living legend and a hero.

After the Gemini missions Dave Scott went on to particpate in the Apollo IX mission and was the 7th man to land on the Moon in 1971 with the Apollo XV mission.

Ayer por la tarde fuimos a la charla y presentacion Two sides of the Moon del escritor y astronauta Dave Scott . Fue una sesion interesante y entretenida. Durante una hora Dave Scott nos explico con detalle la carrera espacial y en general las misiones Gemini, las misiones Apollo y la llegada a a la Luna. Two sides of the Moon es precisamente el titulo del libro que Dave Scott y el cosmonauta ruso Alexei Leonov han escrito juntos. Es un relato de la carrera espacial entre los Estados Unidos y la Union Sovietica, vista en perspectiva desde los dos bandos opuestos. En el pasado, un libro de colaboracion como este hubiera sido imposible. Los dos paises eran enemigos acerrimos, lanzados a una carrera para ser los primeros en aterrizar en la Luna. Estados Unidos llego primero, pero como nos decia ayer Dave Scott, hubieran podido ser los rusos si sus jefes hubieran sido menos cautos. Los cosmonautas rusos son leyendas vivientes al igual que los astronautas americanos.

De hecho, ayer me di cuenta de que estaba escuchando a una leyenda viviente, a un 'heroe'. Porque erase una vez un tiempo en que un puniado de hombres arriesgaban sus vidas para viajar al espacio, un tiempo en que aterrizar en la Luna era un suenio. Y Dave Scott era uno de esos hombres. Hablando de esto y de aquello, Dave hizo un comentario de pasada sobre un problemilla que tuvieron Neil Armstrong y el cuando volvian a la Tierra a bordo del Gemini VIII . Un problemilla? Se da la casualidad de que vi el episodio de las misiones Gemini en la serie From the Earth to the Moon, hace un par de semanas. Lo que paso en el Gemini VIII no fue un 'problemilla'. Scott y Armstrong podian haber muerto alla arriba. Reaccionaron a tiempo y controlaron la capsula Gemini, que daba vueltas a gran velocidad, perdiendo el curso y el control. Si Scott no hubiera tenido la idea de usar el motor de re-entrada para parar el movimiento de 'lavadora' de la capsula, que quede esto claro, yo ayer no hubiera conocido a Dave Scott y Neil Armstron no hubiera pisado la Luna. Esto es lo que quiero decir cuando antes comentaba que ayer conoci a una leyenda viviente y a un heroe.

Despues de las misiones Gemini, Dave Scott participo en la mision Apollo IX y anios despues fue el septimo hombre en pisar la Luna en 1971 a bordo del Apollo XV .
