Tomorrow, if you cannot be in Barcelona... you may try Cork then! Because the best day in the whole year to be in Barcelona is tomorrow, 23rd April, Sant Jordi (St Georges's day). But this year, the city of Cork (Ireland) will also celebrate Sant Jordi, patron saint of Catalunya and England (but Cork is NOT celebrating it to imitate England where there are no celebrations!!!), between other countries. And why is it such a good day to spend in Barcelona? Well, the City of Cork explains it quite well here : "In Catalunya, the ‘Dia de Sant Jordi’ is a long established tradition which includes giving a book and a rose to friends (not really, it's to lovers). The 23rd April is the Catalan national day, the feast of Sant Jordi (the local name for a legendary figure also called St. George), the national patron, as well as the date on which both Shakespeare and Cervantes died. Thus in Barcelona and the other cities and villages of Catalunya, the day is both a religious and national feast day, which celebrates love through the gift of a rose and culture through the gift of a book. The Catalans have celebrated this day for many centuries but it was only in the early part of the 20th century that the 23rd April was designated the ‘Dia del llibre’ or ‘Day of the Book’ in Catalunya and the rest of Spain, because of its association with Cervantes and Shakespeare. Since then other countries in Europe have followed the Iberian example, and this year Cork people have a chance to join in."
A good explanation although they may have ignored the 'religious' bit of the day. Nowadays nobody cares about that. What we like is the array of book and roses stalls in the city centre, the Catalan flags wawing everywhere and the special bread and cakes especially made for the day!!
