It is mostly agreed that Art is supposed to bring out a response from the viewer. Some artists want to provoke, others want to 'make people think' -as they say...-, others want us to relax and enjoy a painting, a photograph, a scuplture... So it is said the purpose of art is getting a response, a reaction, from the viewer. Some think that only a 'educated' viewer can really appreciate and adequately respond to Art. Not so, not so! A football hooligan showed his appreciation of a photographic exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts in London, where a great FIFA footballers exhibition was taking place. On seeing David Beckham's portrait (worth £7,500, taken by the portrait photographer Mike Holm)the hooligan adequately reacted to 'Art''s influence! Taking out his felt tip pen, the hooligan wrote LOOSERS in Beckham's portrait, a reference to losing the match at the European Football Cup 2004 and spelt with a double 'o' a possible reference to Rebecca Loos, the woman who earlier this year claimed she had had an affair with Beckham. So there you are! Even 'non educated' viewers do have a reaction to Art! Supposing Beckham's photo is Art, of course...but that's another topic!

I remember people using the saying 'driving/speeding like Fittipaldi' when I was a child. Like in 'your cousing drives like a Fittipaldi in his new sports car'.When I asked, I was told he was a legend in Formula 1 races. For years, I thought that Fittipaldi had died long ago. After all... surely a 'legend' should be dead?. But no. I was reading the newspaper today and found an article about last weekend's Festival of Speed in Goodwood (United Kingdom). And then, to my surprise, I read that Emerson Fittipaldi had attended the festival! Wops! So he is alive then! A bit like when Bela Lugosi re-appeared in the Ed Wood's film Glen or Glenda, when everybody thought he had been dead for years. Now I understand the saying 'legends never die'...

P.S.: Although I have to point out that Bela Lugosi is dead. Truly dead and buried at the Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City, California. For a full list of all famous Hollywood stars buried there, see here.

Very interesting for travellers: Cholera vaccine is launched in UK
UK travellers will be able to obtain a cholera vaccine for the first time in a decade from Thursday. The Dukoral vaccine , taken as a raspberry-flavoured drink, will be available from GPs and travel clinics. Cholera is an acute intestinal infection, spread by contaminated food and drink. Experts said the vaccine will help protect against traveller's diarrhoea - a bigger threat to holiday-makers than cholera.

I read in a Spanish newspaper: X cinemas (porn cinemas in Spanish) will cease totally to exist in Barcelona due to the closure of the last porn cinema.
"After exactly 20 years of existence, the already historical X cinemas will definitevely disappear from urban Barcelona this year. Because the last surviving theatre, Cinema Oriente, also known as Sala Roma at Arago Street, will be knocked down in six months time. The massive appearance of videoshops, a great demand for renting porn tapes and the sex shops cabins, in addition to the internet and the broadcasting of porn films on TV, has killed the initial popularity the X cinemas had in the last decade. They were a typical feature during the Spanish transition from dictatorship to democracy in the mid 70s. .Three months ago another historical X cinema, the old Maryland in Urquinaona Square closed its doors. Before that the X cinemas in Bonsucces Street and the mythical Avenida de la Luz X cinema had already dissappeared."

Well, at the end their clients were mostly dirty old men so no surprise that younger audiences were discouraged to enter these premises and were rather happier with renting videotapes. But it is true X cinemas were a typical feature in Barcelona. Now they are going to dissappear, I am happy I went to see a couple of films in they mythical Avenida de la Luz cinema and the Maryland cinema. For historical reasons, of course. It is something younger generations of people will not be able to do never again!

Another very easy recipe : Tapenade.
Tapenade is an intensely flavored French topping for crusty, rustic bread or as an accompaniment to fish or poultry.
Ingredients:
1 cup pitted black olives
1 tablespoon chopped garlic
1/4 cup capers
5 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
1/8 cup anchovies
Salt (a pinch and added at the end, depending on how salty are the olives)
Chop all the ingredients very small and mix together until it forms a paste with texture (not puree) which you can spread on bread. Delicious!

Otra receta bien facil : Tapenade.
Delicioso!

My favourite sauce : Pesto!
Pesto is an Italian cold light green sauce which can be easily prepared at home using a food procesor or manually. It is originary from Genua, where you can find many different varieties, depending on the ingredients. The classic pesto is made with fresh basil leaves are essential, that's why we always keep a pot of pesto growing on the windowsill. Once you've tasted the homemade version, you will never EVER resource again to the jars available in supermarkets. The homemade version being sooo easy to prepare and sooo tasty!

Ingredients (although at home we just improvise with the quantities!):
2 cups fresh basil leaves, packed
1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
1/2 cup Olive oil
3 tablespoons pine nuts or walnuts
3 garlic cloves, finely minced
Place basil leaves in small batches in food processor and whip until well chopped (do about 3/4 cup at a time). Add about 1/3 the nuts and garlic, blend again.
Add about 1/3 of the Parmesan cheese; blend while slowly adding about 1/3 of the olive oil, stopping to scrape down sides of container.
Process basil pesto it forms a thick smooth paste. Repeat until all ingredients are used, mix all batches together well. Serve over pasta.

One of the most beautiful (and famous) gardens in the world: Monet's garden in Giverny . I don't know why but the photos I find in most of the websites look dull and boring, it may be that only going there for yourself or seeing it in a painting by Monet it is possible to see the beauty of it? If you have to visit one place in France, that should be it for me!

I am now reading Brideshead Regained by Michael Johnston. This book is a follow-up to the story of the doomed aristocratic Catholic family, the Flytes, written by Evelyn Waught and so well depicted in the Granada production Brideshead Revisited (this previous link is quite good, giving a summary by chapters of what the book is about). But in doing so, Mr Johnston has incurred the wrath of the Waugh estate, which threatened him with legal action over the unauthorised sequel. Now Mr Johnston has had to agree that his work will never be sold in bookshops. Instead it can only be sold online and all copies must bear a sticker telling the reader: "This sequel is not authorised by the Waugh estate." My copy of the book is from the Library, I guess they bought it on the internet too... I did very much like Brideshead Revisited the book. And the tv series was superb. After reading about 10 pages of this sequel, I would not risk saying this sequel is rubbish but...somehow the characters seem not to be as real as in the first Brideshead. Let's see what I think when I finish the book.. By the way, the wonderful Brideshead mansion can be visited in England, its real name it's Castle Howard . I've been there and found it as gorgeous as depicted in the tv series.

I read in The New Zealand Herald another piece of bizarre news courtesy of our kiwi friends:
Pot grower who fed dope to pig dies
"A Wairarapa man whose special friendship with a wild pig made world headlines in the early 1980s has died. Ivan Churcher and his pet pig Barry shared more than just friendship and fun times together -- they shared a fondness for cannabis that brought both of them to the attention of the law and international media. Mr Churcher, who lived most of his life in rural South Wairarapa, was arrested for possession of cannabis, cultivating 380 cannabis plants and having a pipe for smoking the drug. He pleaded guilty in Masterton District Court and his novel excuse -- that he was growing the plants not only for his own use but also for Barry was not only accepted by the court but has become part of Wairarapa folklore. The prosecuting sergeant at the time John Johnston, who is now Masterton police area controller, conceded that "one smokes it and the other eats it" and that it was likely the pig was addicted to cannabis. Instead of feeling the full weight of the law for his transgressions Mr Church was given a minimum punishment, 75 hours community service. The resulting news story of the court appearance was published through New Zealand, Australia and Britain and even made it to the prestigious New York Times.

Mr Churcher first met Barry in 1976 when he was on a hunting trip in the Haurangi Ranges. He caught the little piglet then about two days old and decided to take him home. Barry proved to be a super intelligent pet who would sit on command and come when called. He also learned to share a smoke and a bottle of beer which he would pick up in his mouth and drain before placing the bottle back down on the floor. The pig also did his bit for charity often appearing at shows for people to try to guess his weight, or how many biscuits he could eat in 24 hours. He enjoyed nothing better than to be given a soapy bath and a wash down with the garden hose afterwards.

Ivan Churcher was involved in several environmental campaigns being passionately anti 1080 poison that he claimed was killing wildlife, other than the possums it was intended for, and also many birds. He also spoke out against those who abused fishing laws by taking undersized crayfish, saying that if sheep farmers went about killing their capital stocks in the same way they would go bust. Ivan Churcher moved north but returned to Wairarapa in his last years and died on Sunday."

Last Friday, Big Brother UK launched a competition looking for any individual over the age of 18, to take part in Big Brother's BIGGEST competition. Basically the title sequence before the show (images and music, by the way, composed by Paul Oakenfold) contains a secret message - its up to you to crack it.The judges, at their discretion, will select a number of people with the correct answer to come to the studio and battle it out for the big prize: Being Big Brother for a day and taking decisions on how to run the house : lights, shower, tasks, rewards and punishments.. The competition closes on Friday 9th July 2004.
The numbers are:
23.8.15
19.1.9.4
12.9.6.5
23.1.19
6.1.9.18
So I gave the numbers to SD this afternoon...and after 5 minutes he came back with the correct answer, saying it was very easy! Now, 5 minutes, that is really good, eh? SD is the most intelligent kiwi on the planet!

I must be getting old... My brain cells are dying!! My mind went totally blank this morning. I really could not find some EXTREMELY important documents. I should have send them to a Board for approval. But I could not remember having done it. But they were not in the folder where I used to keep them. I could not interrupt the Board to ask if they had the documents. So I went through ALL my archives and folders looking for this documents. I found docs which looked as if they belonged to the Iron Age (provided people then had paper and pen, which they didn't). But not the docs I was looking for. The Board took ages to finish. Then I could not get hold of the Minutes Secretary. Finally I managed to speak to the Chair. This very nice gentleman came back to me after 5 mins with the news that the docs where indeed submitted to the Board. Wow! I forgot I sent them there then! But now it comes a horrid twist...some other docs have been recorded in our system as submitted to the Board but nobody can find the hardcopy! Is it my cells dying or is it...Gremlins!!??

On June 8th, 2004 a celestial event of historical scientific importance is taking place when the silhouette of the planet Venus once again crosses the face of the Sun as seen from the Earth. This event or transit of Venus last occurred in 1882, so no one alive today has ever witnessed the transit of Venus.

This magnificent array of waterfalls is located in Southern Brasil in the state of Parana on the border between Argentina and Brasil. They stretch for 2.5 miles plunging 269 feet (82m) into Iguaçu River. They are absolutely fabulous. Numerous rocky and wooded islands on the edge of the escarpment over which the Iguaçu River plunges divide the falls into some 275 separate waterfalls or cataracts. The name of the falls comes from the Guarani Indian word meaning "great water." In 1986 Iguacu Falls were declared a Natural Heritage of Mankind by Unesco. Iguacu is also the name of the restaurant where SD's parents organised a gathering for friends and family to meet me in 2000. I do heartily reccommend this restaurant, if you happen to be in Auckland.

Well, I was sooo excited with the D-Day anniversary, that I forgot another anniversary! Believe it or not, this Wednesday 2nd June was the ONE YEAR anniversary of this blog! So Long and Thanks for All the Fush& Chups is a year and 2 days old! Congrats my little blog!

So Long and Thanks for All the Fush & Chups tiene 1 anio y dos dias! Felicidades, querido blog!

This Sunday 6th June is the 60th Anniversary of D-Day, when the allied troops left Portsmouth and other British harbours determined to liberate Europe from the Nazi's tyranny. I feel a deep admiration for the photographer who took the above photo : Robert Capa. He must have been scared to death but he was there just as the soldiers were. Just as he had been with the soldiers and risking his life as well when he stood by the Republican Army in the Spanish Civil War. You can see all the photos Capa took in Normandy : here and then click on the black & white photo on the right side of the screen.

We may go up to London to see Edward Hopper's painting exhibition at the Tate Modern. This retrospective exhibition is the first major Hopper show to take place in the UK for over twenty years and presents many of his most iconic images, like Nighthawks. Unfortunately, they are not exhibiting my favourite painting by Hopper : Gas (see picture above). It has been repeated ad nauseam that Hopper is the best in portraying loneliness. I may agree with that, but to me the uneasiness you feel when looking at a Hopper it is mostly caused by the subtle creepiness of the image. In Gas, for instance, one can sense that fear felt when you are driving on a deserted road at dusk and your car is about to run out of gas and what will happen to you then? Will some psycho creep out of the woods and stab you on the back? Then you happen to see the lights of a gas station. You are saved! Or are you? Maybe the psycho is waiting for you at the gas station! So you fill up the tank with fear, quickly start the car and drive again into the dark road...into safeness? I think it is this feeling of uncertainty, of wondering what will happen next that stays with you while looking at a Hopper's painting. I would not hang a Hopper's at home. But then, I think most of paintings are not for decoration!

Estamos salvados. O no? O quiza no?

Today I started reading 'Girl with a Pearl Earring' by Tracy Chevalier. In seventeenth century Delft, a prosperous town in Holland, life was orderly. Rich and poor, Catholic and Protestant, master and servant: all know their place. So when Griet becomes a maid in the household of the painter Johannes Vermeer, she thinks she knows her role: housework, laundry, and the care of his six children. She even feels able to handle his shrewd mother-in-law, his restless, sensual wife and their jealous servant. What no-one expects is that Griet’s quiet manner, quick perceptions and fascination with her master’s paintings will draw her inexorably into his world. As she becomes part of his work their growing intimacy spreads tension and deception in the ordered household and even – as the scandal seeps out – ripples in the town beyond. Tracy Chevalier was inspired by the girl from one of Vermeer’s most loved and mysterious paintings. She has created an extraordinary and moving novel on the corruption of innocence and the price of genius. For a detailed study of the painting, see the link here.. The film's website is here.

As if the Eurovision Song contest had not been addictive enough for this month, Big Brother 2004 started last Friday. They said it would be 'evil' and yes, it's evil in cliches and stereotypes. I wonfer how the producers select the contestants.. do they write a list like : Right, this year we need two gays, a transgender, a lesbian, a naive blond, a sexy blond, a bubbly brunette, a vain body builder, an asylum seeker... Big Brother pretends to be 'a good portrait of our society'. Sure. But mind you, in black and white. Because in Big Brother contestants are either goodies or baddies. Nice or rude. Black and White. The other colours do not exist in BB. Let's make things easier for the audience, think the producers. Let's mash the potatoes for the children!
