In the UK the saying goes that if it rains on 15 July, also known as St Swithin's Day, it will rain for 40 days and 40 nights.  St Swithin was a Saxon bishop of Winchester who asked, in humility on his deathbead to be buried outdoors, where he would be rained on.  Legend has it his remains were moved inside the cathedral in 971, after which it rained for 40 days and nights - hence the weather lore began:

Full forty days, it will remain
St Swithin's Day, if it be fair
For forty days, t'will rain no more.

 
Statistics show that there is very little truth in the saying. No occasions in the weather record show a period of wet or dry weather lasting that long after a rainy or dry 15 July. Some years have come close - in 1976, 38 of the following 40 days were dry across southern England but this followed heavy showers and thunderstorms on the evening of the 15th itself.

 
 En el Reino Unido dice el refran : "si llueve el 15 de julio, (también conocido como día de St Swithin's), llovera durante 40 dias y 40 noches".  St Swithin fue un obispo sajon de la ciudad de Winchester quien, en su lecho de muerte, pidio ser enterrado fuera de la catedral en un acto de humildad, para  que la lluvia mojara su tumba .  La leyenda dice que sus restos mortales fueron exhumados y enterrados de nuevo dentro de la catedral en 971, despues de lo cual llovio durante 40 dias y noches - y fue entonces cuando aparecio el dicho popular:

Las estadisticas demuestran que poca verdad hay en el refran. No hay  constancia de que haya existido tan largo periodo de tiempo seco o lluvioso despues del 15 de julio. Algunos anios ha estado cerca - en 1976, no llovio durante 38 de los 40 dias siguientes al 15 de julio  en el sur de Inglaterra, pero en este caso, se contradice la tradicion, ya que el 15 habia sido un dia excepcionalmente lluvioso y torrencial.
