A film I will certainly not watch : I Robot with Will Smith. As the movie website says, the film is as 'suggested by Isaac Asimov's book'. Suggested, yes. Meaning let's grab a couple of ideas from the book, let's use the title and then let's add a lot of CRAP to make the movie. Just as they did with 'The Bi-centennial Man'. And man, wasn't I angry then! So in I Robot we end up with an action-packed film with Will Smith chasing an evil robot in a futuristic city. If you want that, fine. But don't think you are getting an Asimov plot here.

Read the book. Read 'I Robot', nine short sci-fi stories about the early positronic robots invented by Asimov. You will then realise that there are no 'evil' robots at all. And if you read the rest of Asimov's books, the Foundation series and the Robot series, you will realise pretty soon that Asimov loved his robot characters. They are more developed, intelligent and lovable than the human characters themselves! Asimov mentioned once that he got more letters from readers complaining about R.Giskard's "death" (a very special robot) than complaining about Elijah Bailey's death (a human and co-protagonist of most of the Robots'series). I guess that's why he never dared 'kill' R.Daneel Olivaw (now..what a very very special robot!), but let us imagine he would be there, in a human shape but with positronic brain, forever and ever taking care of humanity. And that is the clue, revealed in the last book of the Foundation series. The 'machine' created by human beings has been there for thousands of centuries, making sure human beings as a species does not become extinct. What a twist!


La pelicula que me niego a ver : I Robot con Will Smith de protagonista. Como dice la pagina web de la pelicula, el film se ha realizado 'inspirado en el libro de Isaac Asimov'. Inspirado, si. Pero mal inspirado. Porque lo que han hecho aqui es sacar un par de ideas del libro, usar el titulo y aniadir un monton de MIERDA. Justo lo que hicieron el 'Hombre del Bicentenario'. Se la cargaron. Y la rabia que me dio y me sigue dando! En I Robot, el producto final es un film de accion, donde vemos a Will Smith persiguiendo a un robot malvado y asesino por las calles de una ciudad del futuro. Si eso es lo que quereis, ahi teneis la pelicula.

Pero no os enganeis, eso NO es Asimov. Leed el libro. Leed 'Yo Robot', nueve relatos cortos sobre robots positronicos creados por Isaac Asimov. Entonces os dareis cuenta de que no hay robots 'malos' para nada. Y si leeis el resto de los libros de Asimov, las colecciones Fundacion y Robots, vereis que Asimov tenia especial predileccion por sus creaciones roboticas. Los personajes robots son mucho mas profundos, inteligentes y simpaticos que los personajes humanos! Asimov dijo una vez que habia recibido mas cartas de lectores quejandose de la 'muerte' de R.Giskard (un robot...muy especial!) que quejandose de la muerte de Elijah Bailey (un humano y protagonista principal de muchos relatos en la serie Robots). Supongo que seria por esa razon por la que nunca se atrevio a 'matar' a R. Daneel Olivaw (otro robot...muy pero que muy especial), sino que nos dejo la puerta abierta a la imaginacion, para que pudieramos imaginar que Daneel estaria tambien presente en el futuro, con otra forma fisica quiza, pero aun presente para cuidar de la especie humana. Y ahi esta la clave, que se nos da en el ultimo libro de la serie Fundacion : la maquina que los humanos crearon, es la que ha estado guiando y protegiendo a la humanidad de la extincion. Que final!
