We watched 'The 100 Greatest War Films' programme (2 programmes, 4 hours each) in Channel 4 last weekend. We both thought Apocalypse Now would be Number One. Not because we especially like it (A reminder : My nickname is not because of the film but because of the book the film is based upon, 'The Heart of Darkness' by Joseph Conrad) but because we thought a Francis Ford Coppola film with its mythical status would easily make it to Number One. It may have been so in the 80s. Not anymore. The late 90s brought us very realistic, well-documented war films. And even if the premise of the film is not that great, the Number One War Film was revealed as... 'Saving Private Ryan'. When I say the premise of the film I mean the quasi-stupid mission the soldiers undertake in the film. Looking for a soldier named Ryan so he can be pulled out of war, taken back home to his parents just because there is a regulation in a book which stipulates a soldier should survive if all his brothers have died in battle. So the premise is stupid, we are talking about sending some valuable soldiers in an almost impossible quest which is not going to produce any visible results against the enemy. But...what I think makes 'Saving Private Ryan' a great war film is the opening scene. It is the most authentic D-Day disembarkment in Normandy's beaches, the killing, the very realistic sound of bullets penetrating flesh, the cameras movement, the grainy texture of the film which reminds us of Robert Cappa's photos...that amazingly realistic and terrifying opening scene is what it makes 'Saving Private Ryan' a great war film.

Este fin de semana vimos el programa 'The 100 Greatest War Films" (Las 100 mejores peliculas belicas -en ingles, 2 programas, 4 horas de duracion cada uno) en Channel 4. Ambos pensamos que la ganadora seria Apocalypse Now . No porque sea nuestra preferida (por cierto, mi nickname The Horror no viene por la pelicula sino por el libro en el que se basa la pelicula, 'The Heart of Darkness' de Joseph Conrad) sino porque supusimos que dirigiendo Francis Ford Coppola y teniendo la pelicula las dimensiones miticas que tiene, pues eso, 'crea fama y echate a dormir', no? Pues no. Quiza era asi en los 80, pero las cosas han cambiado. A finales de los 90 se dirigieron peliculas de gran calidad, bien documentadas, realistas. Y si bien la premisa en la que se basa la pelicula ganadora no es nada del otro mundo, se revelo que la Numero 1 de la lista era... 'Saving Private Ryan'. Cuando digo que la premisa no es nada del otro mundo me refiero a que es cuasi-estupida, vaya. Que en medio de una batalla devastadora se envie a un puniado de soldados a cumplir una mision sin pies ni cabeza... pero eso es lo que hay. Y nuestros soldados cumplen la orden y se disponen a buscar a un soldado llamado Ryan en territorio enemigo. Y por que? Porque una ley de reciente creacion dispone que se devuelva a casa al soldado cuyos hermanos han fallecido en combate. Y alla vamos, a malgastar esfuerzos y soldados que estarian mejor empleados luchando contra el enemigo. Por eso digo que la premisa es estupida. Pero eso no quita que el film sea estupendo. Y esta bien claro que 'Saving Private Ryan' consiguio el puesto numero 1 por las primeras sobrecogedoras escenas, que nos dejaron con la boca abierta. Ahi tenemos el mas autentico Dia D de todos, el famoso y crucial Desembarco en Normandia. La matanza, la sangre, el sonido de las balas penetrando en los cuerpos de los soldados, el movimiento de las camaras, la textura granulosa del fim que nos recuerda a las famosas fotos de Robert Cappa ... esas increiblemente realistas escenas iniciales son las que colocan a 'Saving Private Ryan' en la lista de las mas memorables peliculas belicas.
